Compiz does...nothing?

I have compiz installed from the community repo, and it seems all went well.  I have X setup with nvidia, as well.  However, when I issue the command 'compiz --replace', metacity disappears, but nothing else happens.  The command yields no errors, nor does dmesg.  I have no effects whatsoever (even terminal is still opaque).  If I run 'metacity --replace', metacity shows up for a brief moment, then disappears again.  I have to restart X in order to get my window borders back.

I've searched the forums for an answer to this, but it seems the other "no window border" problems are quite different from my own.  Here is my xorg.conf, just incase.
