i'm a sucker for pretty pictures

so i installed beryl, and cant get it to work. got it to load at startup. but beryl crashes and reverts to the kde manager. if i try to disable the revert option, that i read forces beryl to work sometimes, i have no window manager

so basically, beryls not working. i do have my nvidia drivers installed and working. im probly just missing something, any ideas?

Have you followed the wikis, specifically the section on preparing Xorg for beryl? Just a suggestion...

i went through the beryl page to setup beryl and get it in the startup, so yeah, and i know ym nvidia drivers are working because i was playing UT2k4

edit// actually, you're right, that composite guide looks like i might need to do

i just saw the thread on kdemod........i know i mentioned somewhere around here all the kde programs bugging me that i had to have them. didn't know about kde mod. wish someone would have mentioned it when i was trying to get something installed. i've been deleting k-menu shortcuts to hide some of those programs

oh well, im done with my arch test system, moving on to my desktop tomorrow, 64 bit , at least i know now

Do you mean Compiz-Fusion when you say Beryl? In case you don't, you should really try compiz-fusion (there's a good wiki entry for it) since beryl is no longer actively maintained since beryl and compiz merged into compiz-fusion

i've thought of compiz, sort of, i've mostly only heard of it. never seen screenshots until now when i just looked up some up just now. im pretty sure i've seen it mentioned on fedoraforums a while back when i was using fedora, never touched it then because it was fairly new, i think it was stated to be buggy then? i personally think fedora's just buggy, i never liked it. im pretty happy with kubuntu on my laptop, and now arch on my desktop(s)......though i may still run kubuntu on my media center

about compiz, just looked it up on the wiki and found this

IMPORTANT: Compiz Fusion is undergoing rapid development and as such it can be rather volatile. To save yourself a lot of time and frustration, this software should not be installed on mission-critical systems--it will likely break your X desktop at some stage!

ill stick to beryl for now, itll still shock anyone i know. i've been showing screen shots of my linux installs at work, and ppl ask me what version of windows is that......we used to be vista support.........ppl see my zen vision and ask if its a zune.....we're currently zune support......and the MS execs who float around once in a while ask me why not a zune.....lol, sorry, getting off topic

Compiz-Fusion is the successor of Beryl and I think beryl is less stable than compiz-fusion.

Ubuntu decided against using Beryl in its default setup a while back, but they will enable Compiz-Fusion by default for supported hardware in their next release. (arstechnica.com)

I installed using nesl247's (thanks nesl247) PKGBUILDS with yaourt using

yaourt -S compiz-kde-git compiz-bxop-git ccsm-git compiz-fusion-plugins-git compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-git compizconfig-python-git libxompizconfig-git fusion-icon-git emerald-git emerald-themes-git

I use kdemod and start the whole shebang with fusion-icon works like a charm. Previously I was using beryl. I think this is stable and works very well.

maybe ill give it a go on my main desktop then this weekend. right now i've got beryl working on this test system. but its only a celeron 1.3, 512mb ram, and a geforce 3. works good though

I dunno about less stable...there is something to be said for Beryl, in its last incarnation it went through many revisions before it finally made it into the Extra repo.

Compiz-Fusion isn't even to a stable release yet (straight from the forum).

That Beryl hasn't been updated in some time doesn't make it any less stable. Personally, I'm waiting till Compiz-Fusion hits a stable release.

ya, im sort of liking the kdemod theme i setup on my 64bit box this morning....definitely likeing 64bit alone so far though

When I first installed Arch, I put it on a spare partition on a secondary drive. Once I realised I was "home" I decided to copy it onto my main drive, which is faster. So I took the opportunity to try out both Compiz-Fusion and Beryl on otherwise identical installations. I have to say that for me (and as always, YMMV; I have a pretty low-end ATI card using the Xorg driver),Fusion is definitely still a bit choppier and flakier than Beryl. Nothing serious - slightly lower framerate, the occasional dump to the fallback WM - but I'll stick with Beryl for the time being.
