I think core software should come as is, and if someone wants to customize it after installation, then so be it. I created an OpenOffice splash a while back, but it featured a custom Arch logo. Here's a simplified version of it (sans Arch):

And of course, here's the official splash...what could possibly be wrong with it? IMHO it's very elegant:

I don't boot my openoffice with a logo so I have no opinion or vote. Although I like the ones that T-u-N-i-X posted.

For those who don't care for splash screens in general, the OOo splash can be disabled easily by editing /opt/openoffice/program/sofficerc as root and changing Logo=1 to Logo=0.

With the logo competition -- won't the splash screens that include the arch linux logo possibly need to be changed?

once we will change our design we might also change splashes and desktop themes/wallpapers. we will see.

That would be a lot of fun! I've been having fun making all kinds of artworks related to the logo competition, and I think the OO.o splash would be a neat addition to my current design portfolio.

Even a separate artwork package would be fun.
