Hi everybody.
I've seen about the new core repository but my last pacman update didn't create the core entry on /etc/pacman.d and I cant find the URL for this repository.
Any suggestions?
Thanx a lot in advance.

The current repository is gone, instead we have the core repository now. A pacman update will add /etc/pacman.d/core and users should change all "current" references and URLs in pacman.conf to "core". We added compatibility symlinks, so old configurations should still work for a while.

Patience... I think... I had a look on the ftp.archlinux.org and the core directory is already created there, but doesn't seem to be accessible yet - same thing on one of the mirrors I've looked up. Maybe they're waiting until the mirrors are properly synced or something, I imagine the logistics of such a change are complicated...

The logistics are simple and completely out of our hands. I think if you all wait for a day everything will have settled and the mirrors will have the new stuff.

That sounds logical.. I'll wait and see what happens on the next pacman update.
Thanx a lot.

posting your updated pacman version would help even more: pacman 3.0.5-4 has the fixes.

Mine is still 3.0.5-3. None of the updates that I see on the main page are available for download yet. I'm syncing with ftp.archlinux.org, which is usually pretty instantaneous so something definitely is out of the ordinary. My "current" database has been up to date when I checked just moment ago - last time it was synced was probably sometime yesterday.

The change has gone smoothly for me. Nothing to signal.
Thanks for the work behind this change.

Everything is alright, just wait for the mirrors, they need time for syncing....even ftp.archlinux.org (what you usually not use, because of bandwidth limitation to it). Everything will be run smooth, so just be patient.....

There's never been any guarantee that ftp.archlinux.org will be quicker than any other mirror at getting its updates - it's on a separate physical server from the main repos and syncs like any other mirror.

The reason I'm using it, actually, is simply because, overall, it is the fastest one for me (in spite of it being throttled down and all) - it still maxes out my connection at around 350MB/s and works very reliably.
BTW, as far as the current->core is concerned: it's all working now.

Yeah, after the upgrade is it safe to rm -rf /var/lib/pacman/current ?

aha.

If you remove /var/lib/pacman/local/ , you're dead.
If you remove any others directories in /var/lib/pacman (normally only sync databases), you should be perfectly safe. The sync dbs are downloaded on a pacman -Sy anyway.

I found the transition today very smooth. I noticed the message that displayed while ijnstallation and did an immediate -Syu which told me that ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/archl … re/os/i686
wasn't quite there yet so I commented it out and ran rankmirrors on the file.

The choice of the new repo name is misinterpreted by file manager programs :
in Krusader every file with 'core' inside its name is shown with a bomb icon beside it !
I read in Midnight Commander the files are shown in red font !
It reminds the core dump files from a crash of a running program.
It's not so important but I wonder if the choice of 'core' for the repo name is the best choice possible.
It's just an idea seeing the bomb beside the /etc/pacman.d/core file .;)

In pacman 3.1 that file will be gone, so no worries.

Yeah, they've moved to a single file for the mirrorlist, so you don't need to edit a ton of files to change mirrors. It's pretty slick.

Upgraded pacman today with no problem. Ran -Syu and had no difficulties.
Bravo!

How did you do it? What does that single file contain?

Well, no need to use two different files, you can do this directly in pacman.conf .
And you still have the same url specified 5 times.
