Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

After update, I can't login into Gnome.  The GDM starts and I can login in but then a screen comes up:
    "Your last session lasted less than 10 seconds... something may have gone wrong with installation....

-Then view error:
    /etc/gdm/Presession/default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
    /etc/gdm/Presession/defulat: running: /user/bin/sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x  (Something like that...)
*There a couple more lines... than
    /etc/gdm/Xsession: line 228: exec: xterm: not found

soo, that's when I try to login to gnome...
When I try to login into xfce I can log in and everything BUT not everything works... I can't run firefox, filemanager, or anything, but I can run pidgin.  When I try to open firefox **input/output error...

Well, if you guys need me to do anything, just get back to me asap... Thanks.

I -Syu/ -Suf on Septermber 21, 2007

Re: Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

First: pacman -Suf is a bad idea. I don't know why you decided to do it, but you really should not.

Next: what version of pacman is installed? If it's 3.0.5-4 or greater, have you edited /etc/pacman.conf as advised in the install message?

Re: Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

He did it because I told him to. He had a conflicting file and I figured it'd be easier to to rewrite the the file and continue on with the update. He told me he did change current to core. It seems as if he is missing libraries, or the libraries can't be found.

Re: Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

What Mezoko said... I'll check if my pacman version is 3.0.5-4 or greater later cuz I'm a bit busy right now... thanks, any other ideas... I found this bug report though

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8064

I guess I'll try the temporary fix, but I won't until I get input from you guys... muchas gracias

The temporary fix will not fix your problem. It seems as if your problem is much different from the one in the bug report.

Re: Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

Mezoko, should I do something with
"Next: what version of pacman is installed? If it's 3.0.5-4 or greater, have you edited /etc/pacman.conf as advised in the install message?
http://www.archlinux.org/news/345/ "

* I think I did that already...

Re: Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

ejt122390's problem is real and serious! All our Arch32 computers can not use GDM anymore. The reason seems to be that GDM is authenticating through sshd and sshd is down! Starting sshd fails with "bus error". Re-installing openssh doesn't help at all and pacman always reports problems with libcrypt (truncated).
No need to mention how important openssh is...
I don't know yet about the 64-bit computer, but I don't dare restarting until knowing whats going on. If ssh should fail on our terminal server (with NX) the the IT-light turn off.
Any idea what happened?

Re: Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

This is way over my head, geeze... this sounds pretty serious.  Like I said, all I did was -Syu/-Suf and then decided to restart... and then problems arose. JCCI, so this happenned to you on Arch 32? I'm using the 64 bit... If you get any information please tell me about it, cuz I have no idea what to do right now.  Muchas gracias.

Re: Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

If the problem seems to be related to initializing x my the most suspicious update from today seems this one:

[2007-09-21 18:08] upgraded xorg-xinit (1.0.4-1 -> 1.0.7-1)

you can try downgrading - run

pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-xinit-1.0.4-1.pkg.tar.gz

as root.

This is a complete shot in the dark, by the way, though it shouldn't hurt your system in either case (you can always revert this by running pacman -Syu).  Everything works fine on my system (and I've just rebooted to see if I could reproduce your error).

EDIT: Nevermind, follow the link posted by jcci below for a solution.

De nada amigo,
you may follow up on this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 63#p283263

It looks as if my Arch64 computer have similar problems.

xorg-xinit came this morning (Chinese time), but the trouble was there before this upgrade already.

Re: Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

Hey thanks jcci , but didn't work for some reason... I might have missed something.  Well I'm on Arch 64 so:
rm /var/cache/pacman/pkg/openssl-0.9.8e-5- (something like i86... instead of 0i686).pkg.tar.gz
pacman -S openssl

*restart
same thing.....

if you can, step by step... thanks

Re: Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

I solved the problem on Arch64 this way as well.
For the whole action you need root rights of course.
su
<yourrootpasswd>
cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
rm openssl-0.9.8e-5-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz
nano -w /etc/pacman.conf
# Temporarly modify the pacman.conf: Outcomment the following line as wget may not work with the broken openssl package. Later you better use wget again.
XferCommand = /usr/bin/wget --passive-ftp -c -O %o %u
# Update openssl
pacman -S openssl-0.9.8e-5-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz
# Although pacman claims you have the actual version you should update anyway.
# pacman should now download the file from the internet as you erased it from the cache. The acutal file worked well for all my computers.
# Check the result simply by starting sshd and using wget with pacman. There should be no error message. With a working sshd your GDM should be OK again. It worked on 10 Computers here using GDM which had exactly your problem before.
/etc/rc.d/sshd start
pacman -Sy

I had a pretty straight success with this method. I'm afraid if it should not work for you you may have another problem meanwhile.

Re: Problem after pacman -Syu; -Suf

ok well, I tried that... but still not working. I've always had the GDM working, its after logging in that there is a problem.  If I login using gnome
   Error while loading shared libraries: libssp.so.0: cannot open shared object file: no such file of directory

and when I login to xfce, I can get a desktop, but nothing really works.
   Firefox: input/output error

It seems I'm missing a bunch of directories/libraries...

Not sure as far as your problem as a whole is concerned, but the error message points to the libraries that are normally provided by a package "gcc-libs" so try reinstalling it perhaps.
