disconnecting the new hd solved the problem

adjust your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf to account for new drive
that is if your old drive is ide or scsi if its also sata check that original is plugged into sata channel 0 or 1
you will be able to have both drives installed then . it does complicate things with mixed interface drives

Same here. What's the error? I guess that the kernel can't find the root-partition because plugging in the other HDD does something to the devices.

Try editing the the related paths at the grub boot scren, press the "E" key to edit the selected menu entry. I had a similar issue once when adding a third sata drive. for some reason it messed up the order in which grub/kernel deteced the devices, no sense of logic to it. So, if eg. your path is /dev/sda1, sda might be sdb or sdc now.

You might benefit from persistent block device naming
