GDK_USE_XFT=1 not working?!
Ok.. i have the following .xinitrc (and it's been made executable)
export GDK_USE_XFT=1
exec gnome-session
however, when i start gnome.. the font antialiasing is still not working.
I bought a dog the other day...I named him Stay. It's fun to call him... "Come here, Stay! Come here, Stay!" He went insane. Now he just ignores me and drools.

Have you gone into the GNOME control center, and into the font configuration, and enabled anti-aliasing/smoothing?
iirc, GDK_USE_XFT isn't needed anymore (it can be used to turn it off now is all, i think)

yep i've gone into the control panel and it is set to smoothing.
but still nothing.. it's very weird.. initially i had no fonts.. but i fixed that.. and now i can't get past this problem. Is there somewhere in my XF86Config file where i enable xft? Perhaps this is the problem?

make sure you have Load "freetype" in the Modules section of your XF86Config

well.. i gave up.. installed kde 3.1 .. and added some truetype fonts.. and it works in kde.. so hey.. never mind.. 
load freetype was indeed in the xf86config.
the problem was i had not installed any TT fonts.. because as soon as i did.. it came up antialiased.
