Current and XFree86 4.3

New to Arch Linux!
Have Arch sync'd to current image with the exception of XFree86 being 4.3 due to ATI video adapter and TV turner support. I have KDE, Gnome and gdm installed but both KDE and Gnome have serious problems. In KDE there is no background image or color displayed. I have done everything I can find  to fix it on this site and no luck, still gray background only! When Gnome starts there is an error and the bottom panel is empty, top panel is OK! Seems to be serious gcong problems. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Gnome but nothing seems to fix the problem. About to wipe disk and re-install release 0.6 instead of sync to current. Current seems buggy to say the least and using XFree86 4.3 is most likely not tested or really supported. HELP! sad

Re: Current and XFree86 4.3

One of the main reasons I am switching to Arch is to get away from Xorg.  I am coming from Fedora, and  Core 2 uses Xorg. The Gatos project has no plans to support Xorg which means that  the TV portion of my AIW7500 will never work again! Gatos will continue to support XFree86 and should have a 4.4 version out of cvs soon. So, I need get Xfree86 4.3 working now if possible.

Re: Current and XFree86 4.3

According to this document, XFree86 4.4 does support most ati radeon adapters, at least with a minimum level driver. Although the Xfree86 site seems to contracdict this in the readme.ati file. So, I may try xfree86 4.4 again tonight!  http://www.ati.com/developer/altoschart.pdf

Re-installing XF86 4.4 did resolve my problems with X, KDE and Gnome

They will just have to change their mind, because all the distros (the major ones anyway) have left XFree. It will probably die sooner or later. No point of supporting XFree when everyone uses x.org.
