[solved] X ignores xorg.conf?

I installed the latest X from testing, but ow i have a strange problem. It seems that X ignores the "Modes-Line" in the screen section. That means that my system always starts with a resolution of 1600x1200. In gnome i set the resolution to 1024x768 so its no problem there. But gdm starts with the highest resolution.

greetings

GDM starts everytime with the highest resolution in your xorg.conf. If you dont want this, you have to delete all higher resolution's in xorg.conf.

Testing X.org uses the "best" resolution I think. I fixed my resolution with "xrandr -s 1280x1024" line in .xinitrc.

I know. The highes resolution in my xorg.conf is 1024x768. Thats why i asked if X ignores the Modes line.

Hmm, how can i change this for the whole system. GDM still starts with the highest resolution.

I got the same problem when I updated X from testing repository. Not only it ignored xorg.conf (or at least default resolution) but also had problems with adjusting display area to borders of my screen.

xorg 7.3 uses xrandr to set the resolution to what it thinks it should be. this makes it easier for noobs but is imo a pain in the ass.

check this post on how to fix it: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 48#p255048

Ok thanks, it worked. But this is really pain in the ass. I use Linux for round about 3½ years on different machines, but this is the first time ever i have to use Modelines.
