Gunzip: unexected end of file

Hi

I've backed up a partition a few hours ago and now I wanted to restore it, but I get this error from gunzip:

gzip: home.tar.gz: unexpected end of file

Is there any way to recover data from the archive? Google seems pretty pessimistic, I hope someone here knows a method of some kind?
