Re: Arch Linux logo concept

Very nice; it could will replace the current one.  You could maybe try different "blacks" for the A.

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

Really nice. I like the biggest one (with archlinux along the A).

If I finally compile my own kernel, I'll use that logo!
Seems more futuristic to me than the current one.

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

I still like the 1st one of your suggestions best. The arrow must point to the upper right, because pointing to the left suggests something backward. The way you designed archlinux there is also great - arch differs from linux by using bold letters for arch. But it's still clear, that arch and linux belong together, because they've got the same color & font.

edit: I like that in the current logo, too, of course.

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

I don't like how the arch is all black it seems so boring, perhaps you could make the arch look better/more exciting with a gray(ish) border or something?

Nice logo, For starters maybe you could release a wallpaper? And license it under gpl while you're at it. smile

I'd love to use it in my desktop, fits well with Candido Reflux Theme.

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

Much nicer than your previous one. I like the version with "archlinux" under the logo. And the colours are more striking than the current rather dull blue.

I'm still not sure it's better than the present one, though. I agree with the criticisms of it you posted originally (the shadow really doesn't make any sense), but there's something "right" about it. It's arch-shaped, and it looks a little like an "A". This is less arch-like, and I'm not sure of the relevance of the arrow.

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

I like the one that you've chosen for your avatar. And, I like it better than the original one no doubt.

The all black one is a bit to plain imo.

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

Thanks for the feedback, good and bad!  It's still a work in progress and I do plan to add a bit more highlighting to the black arch, as well as to the arrow.

Just so we're all on the same page:
* The 1-color logo is just an example of how it would look if 1-color was necessary (e.g. for priting... most professional logos have a 1 and 2 color version for this purpose)
* thorstenhirsch, I agree about the direction of the arrow... I was mostly trying to see how it looked with a symmetrical arch (both the same width)
* dunc, in keeping with the *swoosh* of the current logo I chose the arrow as the crossbar with the added meaning that we're Archers... archers... bow...arrows.. get the *point*? wink

Thanks again everyone and once I've had a chance to tweak the shading and whatnot, I'll definitely release the source (SVG) for community use.  I'm planning to release a few OB Theme packs in the not-too-distant future as well, but I might release one (that matches the logo) a bit sooner.

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

I like your new logo! Also it's distinctive.
But I like the colours of the old logo better, they are not so 'agressive' (you can look longer at the old colours; I really like the actual colours)
Maybe also try to round the top edges of the A? That would make the logo feel more comfortable to me? I don't know... wink

But I really like the old logo very much! wink

I completely agree.  The current logo does look too much like Captain Picard's communicator badge, so changing that would be a good thing.  However, being a traditionalist, I would like the new logo to keep a tie to the past, with rounded corners, and the same blue, as Doehni commented.

A+ for effort and a good idea!

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

I do not want to be 'a pill' but as much as the logo is nice it does not make me feel like "oh! I want that logo!!
So far I have not seen anything that's clearly much better than the current logo ... and yes the current logo is "Start Treck" like, but then again I liked theTV series too ... lol

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

I'll have to agree on the rounded corners, sort of... IMHO it would look better if the top (both inside and outside) were rounded in a tight curve. The way it is now, it looks kind of... truncated.

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

I really like the concept, but I think the shapes are too square. It makes it look like a word processing application, or something like that, and it's too austere in my opinion... I would add some colours, some orange would be cool, and also some more nuances, shadows, reflections...

The one you use as avatar looks great.
And as you said, the timing for changing the logo is perfect!
