How to get an icon on the desktop when removable media is installed

Did a search and looked in the wiki but didn't see anything.  In other distros (KDE desktop) when you plug in a usb memory stick or put a cd in the cd drive an icon will be created on the desktop allowing for a quick easy way to safely remove the device by right clicking and picking the appropriate item.  I know you can do the safely remove thing in Konqueror but also want it on the desktop.  Any ideas?

Do you have hal daemon running? Do you see those media in media:/ kio-slave?

Right click on desktop, choose Configure Desktop -> Behavior -> Device Icons and make sure Show device Icons is checked.
