I'd try to scale up the arrow a bit, or adjust the shape so there is more blue in the middle and left of the logo.

Wow! Thanks again everybody... I didn't expect to get nearly this many responses. Please bear with me as I'm learning how to use Inkscape as I go along. I'm tweaking things here and there to see what works and what doesn't--of course, it's all in the eye of the beholder.
I have stripped the outer colour from the arrow as I feel the logo should look "good" with just 2 colors (that is, black and something else, or white and something else). I'm trying to accomplish a design that stands out as "professional" in the corporate/technology sector... that means no drop shadows, gradients, bevels, 3d rendering, etc. Just take a look at the top 100 tech companies, most of their logos are 1 colour: Intel, Dell, ATI, AMD, Novell, IBM, Cisco, Linksys, Apple, etc, etc. Even leading Linux distros like Red Hat and Ubuntu use just 2 colors. That's not to say that fan art doesn't get tricked out. I mean Ubuntu has hundreds of wallpapers that mash its logo into all kinds of shapes and sizes, but the official "stock" logo is simply 2 colours. That's what I'm aiming for.
So anyway, onto the design stuff... I'm working with a couple different concepts of the arrow, I think it should be less symmetrical and more fluid, especially since it appears to be in motion. I'll work on it and post the results. IMHO, the square edges of the A are set in the stone... rounding them just looks bad and doesn't at all jive with the archlinux typeface, a problem the existing logo suffers from as well.
Here's an updated version, showing the whitespace around the arrow and what it looks like inverted. Thanks again everyone!

Too much ArchLinux makes the image look crowded it is better to just use it on the side (or on the bottom).
Also a more "archy" A would help too, I think 'Adobe' every time I look at the logo

I like your original logo better than the newer one that is up about 2 posts..

stick with the first!

For the record, the text is just there as filler... it's not meant to be part of the final logo

I agree as well, I liked the two color arrow better. It seems less static, I *love* the colors and it some kind of an eye catcher.
Stick to the first. (:

I think it's not as cuddly as the current one.

Text on the side + 1

I really like the right one, the white border around the arrow looks much more professional. I would prefer the text being below the graphic. It would be interesting to hear how likely a logo change is. As some may remember I also proposed a new logo earlier this year: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=28444

Looks really nice, I like the colours, though maybe the blue/cyan could a bit less saturated/darker, but it still looks good. I would suggest changing the arrow head to look more 3d as the perspecting seems odd for me atm, since the tail of the arrow looks more as if the arrow was uhh horizontal, going upwards and turining, but the arrow head is vertical. I'm guessing I'm just seeing it wrong, but that's the impression I get.
The logo itself would be without any text, right?

I think this logo is not appropriate symbol for "arch".
I cannot see any elements that supposed to symbolize
an arch !

+1 for logo, but IMO current one is much better.

I think the logo thayer.w made has a more "grown up" feel to it than the current logo for lack of a better word(s). And represents where ArchLinux is at the moment in development.

Good work, and he is right about using few colors. But the edges are much too sharp, and should be smoothed. This would make it look much more like any arch I can think of.

Alas, no artwork will ever appeal to everyone... freigeist, you're right, it would be interesting to know how likely the change would be. I have noted that not a single dev or admin has posted here *ahem* which leads me to believe it's a slim chance, but at least I'm learning more about Inkscape

huge improvement now.... more 3D arch now...
keep going

So true.
Definitely some improvments, even thought I personally think that the edges are still to sharp. Guess it's a matter of taste.
I still prefer the current one.

(I like the current logo Arch uses, and I like your concepts, thayer. I certainly ain't the guy to make decisions about changing it on the website tho)

still like your very first one best.

Very nice logo. I like it more than the "stable" version It looks very professional. The only thing that i don't really like about it is the shading under the A. I like the version in the upper-right corner more, the one with archlinux written under the A (it looks more... "stable").
Also, could you make a version with a white A and text? Think about the boot logo, where the background is black, or you could add a white 2-5 px border around the whole thing, or it could be placed in a white square, just like your avatar.
Anyway, great logo, if the new leadership decides to change the logo i'll vote for this one any day
edit:
something like this:
--
I added some extra space around the logo and put them separately because the white one near the black is a bit... psychedellic
Hope you don't mind for messing up with your logo

Could you possibly upload the SVG's for past and future versions, so we could play along? I also would like to try putting it into a wallpaper, if you don't mind.

Yes, i wanted to ask that too. Could we please have the svg?

I'll definitely make the source SVG file available, but I am waiting until I feel the design is "ready" myself. After that you'll be free to do whatever you like with it
