Return to Arch

Hi,

I have reinstalled Arch after using Ubuntu for a few months just thought I would jot down my impressions

Right install no real problem same as I remember 10 minutes is all it took to get me to root login

Made sure network was running set off pacman -Syu loads of updates but again no problems

Got X up & running loaded Openbox/Gnome then started on apps

Ok..

Unlike the point and click of ubuntu, you have to get your hands dirty in a terminal but its kind of refreshing to have real control over your system

Problems need to get hal working miss automounting of stuff [pmount atm!]

Nautilus looks awful [maybe it needs setting up correctly I'll look into it!]

Its good to be back

MrGreen is easily bored so he tends to try out distros that require more work than Arch. He installs ubuntu and says "everything works out of the box except... and then he gets to spend hours setting up the exception"

I took a look at the beta Ubuntu myself a while ago.

Bumpy ride. I really hate the whole between-releases crap release-based distros are experiencing. Arch is just "pacman -Syu", and you're on the new "version" of whatever... Too easy.

Anyway, wb Mr Green.

Any recommendations for those who like to test out different distros?

Mr Green, you don't need pmount under gnome. Just install gnome-volume-manager , nautilus and gnome-mount. If hal is running, gnome-mount will work correctly.

Yeah, I just came back too. I got into Mint for a good month+. Reinstalled Arch lastnight and finally gotten it back. I've never had any problems, but I loved Mint because it's so polished. I have had zero problems with either, however the Mint community is a bunch of new people. One comment made set off their admin and that did it for me.

Linux is as much about the community as it is for the software for me. If that's how they reflect new comers to their distro on the forums then I want nothing to do with it or the distro. I'm back to Arch for good. Not to mention, I HATE non-rolling release distros. I do miss the nice boot splash though. Everything was real integrated and ran real good. I do like their gnome menu, I've converted it over to Arch and have it running pretty good under it. I might make a pkgbuild or something, but I dunknow if anyone's interested besides me in it. I also missed getting into the system and doing stuff by hand. I hate graphical config programs and such. Everything was done for you, and while that's nice, it gets boring. I missed bleeding edge. It's good to be back.

In the end, I'd rate Mint very high. It's the community that it fails upon, and treating new comers like crap reflects badly on everyone. Something some of their admins need to learn.

Point & Click are fine for what they are but like you say being heard in a crowd can be a real pain...Arch wiki is great

Mint well cannot comment only had installed on my laptop for a few days the slab menu [I think its called!] did nothing for me but thats down to personal preference... Splash login wave yes they would be cool and not beyond reach.

Like you I have only installed just installed Arch again will take a little time to set up everything :-) open office is loading as I type and I must remember to sort out cups lol

Community well I agree Arch has a great one.

Welcome back Mr. Green. I've got an Ubuntu machine running in the spare bedroom on old hardware. I needed a machine for a non-tech visitor, and Ubuntu filled the bill. It's so......windows-y. I never thought I would like the command line again (I started in DOS), but once you get comfortable in Arch it just seems so clunky to get things running via graphic configuration programs, at least to me.

AFAIK mint uses usp2 (ubuntu system panel), a python app developed on the ubuntu forums. I found it very resource hungry for a stupid menu.
I prefer gnome-main-menu (a.k.a. slab,you know the one developed by Novell) anytime over it when I use gnome, but that again is also personal preference.
At some time I threw a couple of PKGBUILDs together and they now live peacefully in the AUR
