Due to several complaints of open source ATI driver users, I am quite sure that they are responsible for the console crashing 10% of the time when I try to shut down. Specifically it is the 3D component that makes it do this which agrees with the fact that I never saw this problem until I got 3D acceleration to work. Essentially what I need to do is turn off 3D acceleration while X is running (hopefully this has no chance of a crash) and then shut down which should then go smoothly.
The kernel modules needed for 3D are agpgart, drm, intel_agp (in my case) and r128 (in my case). I cannot unload either of them while X is running because all of them are being used by something... and I'm sure this something is either GLX, SGI-GLX, Xfree86-DRI, or all of the above. Does this mean if I unload these modules in the right order, then unload the kernel modules in the right order... 3D will be completely turned off and I can shutdown without fear?
I would definitely like to know how to unload X modules if possible... I cannot find any instructions on how to do this. Thanks!
