arch didn't seem desktop friendly or stable at first

i recently installed arch and i prefer using kde as my desktop, then maybe gnome. i have tried to install both of them a number of times and everytime i keep getting errors. it just seems that arch .6 isn't very stable.   i suppose i will give it some more time, but i may end up switching back to vector

hmm...I had no problems installing either. Arch seems very stable to me.
I am having problems configuring fonts to not look crappy, but that is far from the fault of the arch devs and the distro itself..

After install did you do the:
pacman -Sy pacman
pacman -Syu
pacman -Sy <insert your choice for X11 here>
pacman -Sy kde

then..
..configure X...

Both x.org and XFree86 worked fine for me..
As well as kde. All I had to do was edit .xinitrc in my user dir, and I was golden..

If it is in the last few days, there has been a problem with kdelibs/kdemultimedia that crashes arts.  This is being worked on by the maintainer and should be fixed Sunday or Monday.
