A more intelligent mixer, please

A little thing that has always annoyed me is my laptop doesn't know to change the "main" mixer when I'm using my laptop's speakers vs headphones.  If I'm on speakers, then the "Master" mixer works fine and I can change it from the kMix icon or using the hotkeys.  But when I plug in the headphones, the "Master" channel doesn't make any difference in volume and the correct mixer is "Headphones". So to adjust the volume, I have to open up kMix and change it myself.  Is there anyway I can have it automatically know to switch the hotkeys and the 'main' mixer over to headphones?

Why not set the key to raise both at the same time?  Via && if it'll let you or maybe a script handler.  Something like

amixer sset Master 2+ && amixer sset Headphones 2+

Then set them equal to each other.  Would that work?
