Arts hangs for 20 seconds

On my laptop I have network configured to static ip address. If I don't have an ethernet cable plugged in, arts doesn't work well. The worst part is that it hangs for 20 seconds every time something is send to it, including when command

artsshell -q terminate

is executed when I log off from kde. This lenghtens log-off for 20 seconds because artsshell just hangs there for 20 seconds. In kde control center I don't have networked sound enabled, so why would arts need network at all? Can I configure it somehow to fix this? When I do

ps aux | grep arts

I see artsd running but there are no network related switches like -n -p -u -N -w

Hello!

Why did you use arts?
Alsa + dmix is alright to play multiple sounds.

What soundcard do you have?

To be honest, I don't know smile It used to be the easiest way to get sound from 2 or more sources play simultaneously and since then (years ago, when OSS was widely used wink ) I kept it enabled in KDE. It is still on in KDE by default and popup help at the checkbox says "Recommended if you want sound" so I just left if checked, although I never used arts for music or movie playback. I thought it's needed at least for KDE sounds to work, but now I found I can just specify an external player.
Thanks for raising that question.

Re: Arts hangs for 20 seconds

That still didn't solve the problem. Although artsd is not running, it seems KDE is trying to stop it on log-off because "artsshell -q terminate" is still run when I logoff and it hangs for 20 seconds before I get to graphical login screen (KDM). If I kill artsshell from VC, I get to KDM immediatelly. It seems like a KDE bug to me.
