cups-pdf setup with gnome

hi guys,

i am using arch for a couple of month now and this is my 1st question. obviously the wiki is pretty nice...

i installed cups, ghostscript and cups-pdf as it is described in the wiki. if i try to setup the virtual printer with the gnome printer manager, i can select the virtual pdf printer but in the 2nd step i cannot select the phostscript colour printer. all dropdowns are empty and i cannot select anything.

any ideas?

thx & rgds

Re: cups-pdf setup with gnome

hrmm... well, I believe the postscript drivers are all installed when you first install cups and cups-pdf, so there should be something to choose in the second step.

I'm assuming you're using the CUPS web interface at http://localhost:631 and that the second step you are referring to is titled "Make/Manufacturer for CUPS-PDF".  If so, you should be able to choose "Postscript" from the "Make:" list, then click Continue and select "Generic postscript color printer rev4 (en)" and follow the rest of the prompts.

If I'm not looking at the same thing you are, please be specific as to what the second step is.

Re: cups-pdf setup with gnome

you probably removed localhost from /etc/hosts ?

You can either put it back if it is not there, or use one of the other options to get to the web interface.
http://yourhostname:631

where yourhostname is the name you have set in /etc/hosts

or you can use your loop back ip adress, which you can find using ifconfig, behind lo (inet addr)

than access the web interface by
http://yourloopbackip:631

Re: cups-pdf setup with gnome

Well, I'm having similar problems with gnome-cups-manager & I don't want to use the web interface.

Me too can see nothing in the dropdown lists in the step 2, as mentioned in the above posts!
Is this a bug in arch linux version of gnome-cups-manager? Because in Ubuntu Live CD on the same machine, I can  see lots of name in the drop down lists to choose from, just as I should!

P.S. : I haven't changed my hostname. Localhost still features in /etc/hosts.I can even access the web interface at http://localhost:631. But, I'd prefer gnome-cups-manager

Can you find out if ubuntu applies any patches to gnome-cups-manager ?

I don't use gnome so I can't verify it, but you may want to file a bug report with the information from my question. It seems that a lot of people have problems with it.

Re: cups-pdf setup with gnome

I don't use Gnome either...I use Fluxbox. Was just trying to play around with gnome-cups-manager. Maybe it doesn't work with fluxbox??

i don't want to make another post, but i have a doubt...
i don't have in my DAEMONS cups, i must add it?
i ask because when i go to http://localhost:631, i get the message Page not found
my hostname is the one i wrote in /etc/rc.conf?, that you refer to hostname, right?

Re: cups-pdf setup with gnome

http://localhost:631 only works when cups is in DAEMONS.

/etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf
to print on my Desktop?
