When I run
shutdown -r now
(or click the restart button in XFCE) my laptop crashes. It will shutdown nice and tidy but when the line system restarting pops up, dog dies. The only way to do a reboot is shutdown -ph now and then boot up again (pushing the powerbutton).

Does reboot work?
#reboot

I have a similar problem, although sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't... I can't offer a solution though. I think it may be kernel related, so I'm hoping a new kernel release sometime will fix it.
(Neither shutdown -r now or reboot works for me reliably)

# reboot also crashes the machine... some nice coloured stripes onscreen and that's it.

Reboot hangs for me as well on one of my systems. The AMD 64/Nvidia machine reboots fine but the Intel/ATI machine I have will hang while restarting. Both boxes are running the default 2.6.23-ARCH kernel. The Intel/ATI system shuts down fine, but a restart will always hang the system requiring me to power off the box manually. I don't yet have a solution, but thought I would post anyway.

Lol, I got this too So is it a combination of fglrx, kernel and new hal?
Edit: oh yes its mostly shutting down that hangs for ages and i guess it turns off at some point.
