Cerebral, thanks for noticing... Yes, Libby is my partner-in-crime, wife and long-time "girl gamer". On a side note, that means someone actually visited our site! I guess I should update it soon
Peets, you're welcome to it! I think I understand what you mean about "comfy". One of the difficulties with decisions such as these is that it's hard to know how much of "comfy" is simply because it's what you know--meaning that the current logo was here when Arch made its first impression upon you. If a 2nd generation logo was in place when you started using Arch, perhaps you would feel the same way about that logo(?).

Hehe, Thayer, it looks like you have some experience in this area (pursuading other people to change logo's) - but then again, you do it for a living
Zl.
BTW: those shirts: I'd buy the left one immediately with your logo, if it were smaller and on the left or right side of the chest

Are you sure that you wrote the correct URL? I got access denied when I tried to view your version.

I like it very much - this is the polish that the current logo could use very much! Maybe two (small) remarks:
1. Could you narrow it a bit, so that the right leg of the main arch is closer to the text
2. I'm not sure whether I like the shadow behind the text...
Overall - to be completely honest - I'd prefer the logo as suggested by thayer and pocowiej (fwojciec - I knew it's something like that - LOL), but if the majority (or the decisionmakers) would only allow the logo to be updated, this one gets my vote!
Zl.

Well, my aim with this one is NOT to make it completely different from the current logo, which is, IMHO, quite recongnizable. Just trying to make it a bit more dynamic, and add some bling to it.
Thanks, zenlord, for the comments. I will work on it a bit more as time permits, and upload the new version soon.
thayer.w, my apologies for cluttering your thread. I can create a new one, but I thought we could have a bit of a competition here.

@foxbunny
I lke your version, it looks really awesome.

To answer the zenlord's request, here are two new variants. The first one is horizontally slightly compressed. The result is something a bit more like the original logo, except that it is rotated in 3D space. The second one, which I like a lot better, uses the larger logotype ("archlinux" part).
I'm at work now, so I will work on this more seriously when I get home. I intend to add some more bling to it, to match it more closely to the KDE4 Crystal icon theme.

fox, no apology necessary and feel free to keep posting to this thread... I think it's great that we've had so many different ideas and opinions shared in one place. I think your last two revisions of the current logo look very nice indeed. My only concern is how well they work at very small sizes without the text (e.g. 24x24 or 32x32 for icon use). Do they proportion well and are the joining arches at the left side still visible (or implied)?

THX for taking my comments and working on it. I like the left one better - I don't exactly know why, but I think it has to do something with the balance between the length and the width. If only the text in the left one was a little more to the right, placing it completely underneath the arch, like it has been done in the version on the right
THX again - I appreciate your work very much!

Aw, that was my mistake... You are absolutely right.
Anyway, the right one is more brutish than the left one. Left, otoh, is more elegant. It's like with people. ;-) You know what, I'm starting to like the left one as well.

Thanks thayer.w.
I will manually tweak the icons, once the final logo is complete. I will most certainly deal with thin parts of the arcs.
Meanwhile, the Arch CD:
Wow! I really like that...although admittedly I liked the left version of the logo as well, but thought the left leg of the arch should align with the beginning of the "arch linux" text. I'm really impressed with the CD though, great look!

Nice job again, but to me the shadow looks even more like Star Trek than the existing logo. I had toyed with modifications of the current logo months ago, but could never end up with something that departed enough from the "trekkiness" without becoming a different design altogether.

I agree, the one on the left is quite nice and feels more balanced. I wonder how it would look without any shadows though, they seem distracting to me, especially as they are overlapping and hard to discern exactly.
I am a gated community.

+1 on both of stonecrest's comments. maybe not get rid of the shadows completely but lighten them up so they are hardly noticeable.
archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

Just to clarify - the tango colored version of thayer.w's design was actually made by Cilian (see post #84) - I just used some of the ideas/designs made by other people to make some GDM themes, that's all - credit should go where it's due

Foxbunny, that's the one (the one on the right this time - aligned vertically).
So now we have IMHO two (very) good alternative logo's. If I had anything to say in this, I would put together a poll and let the community decide which one to use from now on: Thayer's (combo with Cilian's), foxbunny's or the current logo.

Well, I definitely think foxbunny's is a huge improvement on the official logo, and if "the man" isn't willing to replace the official logo with something entirely new, I'd definitely vote for this as a refreshing makeover of the old. The gradients are sharp and more realistic, and the omission of drop shadows is much better IMHO.

Uh... was there a plan to change the logo anyway?
I mean, if there was a plan, we should probably make a more formal contest, and announce it somewhere... so that more ppl can participate...
Like, the logo should be this and that size, it should smoothly scale to this and that, it should print on stickers and CDs... whatnot...
Oh, yeah. Probably clearly define the goals of the redesign.

Yeah, Foxbunny's is good. I kind of like thayer's better, but Foxbunny's improved logo not only looks less trekkish but could be Tango-ized to fit the current website theme and still look good...

You know, guys, there's no reason Arch can't have more than one "semi-official" logo... there'll probably always be only one on the front page, but multiple versions can be available for wallpapers, cd sleeves, t-shirts, and the like.
Indeed, with this much interest in logo creation, it might be a neat idea to have a new "slightly different" logo for each new Arch release; especially if it takes the release name into account.
