USB Stick

Hello.

I was long, long time Windows user, so I'am often frustrated when umounting USB Sticks that they have to "write data to disk" (sometimes longer than copying the data).
On Windows there are two methods to write data to USB. This one known from Linux and this one which writes data at copying "complete" to the stick.
Of course the second one is much slower when copying but when I'am in a hurry is much better to umount and take the USB Stick with me.
Is there any possibility to do so always with Linux?

Thanks, Andreas

Re: USB Stick

Hi.
What you are reffering to, is mounting with sync option. I don't use it not only because it is slow, but because it stresses the usb stick more and its reliability declines sooner. My previous stick died after frequent sync mounting, fortunately it was still covered by warranty. From the mount man page:

sync   All I/O to the file system should be done  synchronously.
In  case  of  media  with  limited number of write cycles
(e.g. some flash  drives)  "sync"  may  cause  life-cycle
                     shortening.

That said, if you use KDE / konqueror to mount, then plug in the usb stick, then in konqueror right click on it, select properties, under mounting tab check synchronous. If you mount with command line and use /etc/fstab, then add sync option to fstab.

Re: USB Stick

If you're using vfat (fat32) partition on your usb stick use "flush" not "sync". It's a new mode for mobile devices like this and works just like you described it. It's also much faster than "sync". I'm using it with all my vfat devices and it seems to work really well.

Re: USB Stick

I've never used gnome volume manager but maybe this will help you? (just change async/sync to flush if it's possible).
