What would you do if ... (gparted related question)

You resized a Windows partition with Partition Magic and was ready to resize an ext3 partition, but GParted and Knoppix don't boot?  I don't know what the deal is, but the GParted LiveCD gives me a generic and unusable grub, and Knoppix can't find the root filesystem.  Is there an easier way to resize a root ext3 partition without booting a Live CD?
