Pacman -S hangs when resolving dependencies.

When running pacman -S <package> it hangs on "resolving dependencies...".
I did a pacman -Sy but I still have the same problem.

I don't remember doing any upgrades before this stopped working.... any clues??

Try running 'pacman -S --debug <package>'. Hopefully that will pinpoint the problem.

Yeah, I did that before, but nothing interesting showed up, it hangs when resolving dependencies and no messages are displayed from there.

Is the disk busy or totally idle when this happens? Same question for the CPU.

And that's using pacman 3.0.6 on i686?

The cpu is at 100% (most of it being sys time)
Also, I'm running Arch64

About the disk usage, I'm not sure, this is a laptop, so it isn't as easy as looking at the hdd led, is there some command I can use for that??

That always happens to me if there's a dead mount point lurking around on my system, easiest way to test is just to... reboot (just typing df would also hang). I find it slight amusing that even after all these years, ejecting a floppy too fast could bring the almighty kernel to a halt. Oh well.

Well, I already rebooted twice before, but that hasn't fixed the problem, also, I don't have anything mounted other than hard disk partitions, procfs, etc

It's hard to tell what's wrong, so here are a few ways to get more informations :

* upload your /var/lib/pacman (eg in tar.gz) somewhere, as well as your pacman.conf , so that others can try reproducing the bug
* try compiling pacman with --enable-debug , then run it inside gdb

Thank you shining, by looking at /var/lib/pacman I found my problem

% du -h --max-depth=/var/lib/pacman
1.9M    /var/lib/pacman/core
27M     /var/lib/pacman/extra
1.9M    /var/lib/pacman/current
20M     /var/lib/pacman/community
415G    /var/lib/pacman/local
415G    /var/lib/pacman

% du -h --max-depth=1 /var/lib/pacman/local
...
415G    /var/lib/pacman/local/bigreqsproto-1.0.2-1
...
415G    /var/lib/pacman/local

So I removed that directory and now pacman is working again

I don't know what caused this, but 'depends' in that directory seems to big...

% ll -h /tmp/bigreqsproto-1.0.2-1
total 415G
-r-------- 16109 root 49168 993M 1952-06-28 01:08 depends

Hm - do you still have that directory?  What's in the depends file (it should just be plaintext)?

I still have that file, it seems like my filesystem is corrupted because I can't delete it even if I want, I'm going home now, but I will check the contents and tell you what I find.

Well, I can't read the file, I get an I/O error, I'm going to fsck my partition now;
