Another concept based on the original meaning of the word arch, as used by Judd.

It's still just a very rough sketch. The postition of the crown as well as the details on it have to be reworked, and the 'penguin' as to be more obvious. But I like the posture and the proud upwards beak.
I really like this penguin looking font. It's London MM, mixed with London Two. Both are from the freeware London Between set.

Arch being all-console after install and all,
you just gave me a terrific idea! Later I'll try to elaborate it.

Yeah. But they still mix blue here and there. When I tried openSUSE 10.3, the blue was actually quite noticable, precisely because the wallpaper was green. Very good artists in the openSUSE camp, IMHO.

What's the original meaning? I've always wondered.

Arch Linux as in Arch Nemesis

freigeist, nice sharp logo there. But maybe a bit too tall?
Matt3o, I think the current logotype matches better with your logo concept. Nice color, though. Don't know how well it goes with arch.
You know what I think, guys. Arch being all-console after install and all, I think (and 'tis but IMHO) a touch of black may leave a good aftertaste. We only have to be careful and keep in mind the logo would have to be used as the boot splash icon as well. Arch may be lightweight, but it's not a light distro.
What do you think about this?

Perfect, thank you!
So it has the meaning of the original Greek, it would be appropriate to have some Greek hints in the logo, I think. It actually would make more sense than the arches. What has a distro to do with arches? Instead the concept of leading and rulership applies better.

doh... this changes everything... why the hell am I playing with arches!?

Because both versions are valid. Since the current logo has been around for longer than I can remember, and then some... so people have come to believe Arch actually stands for arch as in St. Louis Arch... I just thought that it was kinda interesting to try and do somthing with the original meaning.

Thanks rson451, to be quite honest it's my personal favourite, above and beyond all the other concepts I've done. I'm using it in my pypanel and it looks pretty darn good at 24 pixels. I'm afraid that you and I might be the only fans though.
In case anyone doesn't quite "get it", the nemesis logo symbolizes not only the comforting arch shape, but also the arrow of the community (archers) and the silhouette of the chief nemesis (Archlinux), stepping into the light if you will.
I like the idea that the silouette could be mashed up for various artwork (horns on its head, wearing a hat, headphones, etc).

What do you think about this?
Tricky question. Font is very sharp and professional. Maybe I'd kern it a bit tighter, but that's me.
As for the shape... Well, you know me. I'd make the left leg sharper (thinner). Or maybe this (if I was thinking outside my own thoughts), make the distance between inner and outer arc roughly the same as the width of the left leg. You'd probably have to work on the right leg to get the smooth arch shape, but I can't imagine that far.
BTW, grey (at least it appears grey on my monitor at work) looks really good. And the black is not really black, right? I love that about your style!
Maybe you could test the thing to see how it handles when scaled, on dark bg, etc... Otherwise, I like the colors and the font. And the shape is interesting...
And yeah, just remembered. Could you try a version where the right leg points to 'x' in 'linux' rather than the dot on the i? It gives too much focus to the dot, IMHO.

Just to throw my $0.02 in here.
I'm a long time user (if 4+ years can be considered a "long time") and have always thought the current logo was bad. I do think it looks treckish, but even if it didn't, it would still be bad. I'm not saying that to be cruel to whoever made it (Judd I think), and I certainly couldn't do any better myself, but I just don't like it. IMHO, it doesn't look much like an arch or an "A".
New proposals I do like:

You're welcome. Even before knowing the real (intended) meaning of Arch, I thought how it would have been the arch(nemesis) instead of the arch. Turns out it was the arch (nemesis)...
Anyway, since Arch has, after all, a fairly international community, I'm not sure woth Greeking it would work... But will know after you post your concepts.

Yes, at this stage I'm not sure the concept of the encircled compasses would still fit, even though our maths come mostly from Greek culture. I was thinking about an alpha put somewhere, or something of that sort... I think somebody has already posted a logo with the A represented by an alpha...
But also, your concept of the crowned penguin is quite cool and straight forward. I think we should have something more imposing than a simple arch...

I 'got it', but I wasn't quite happy with being represented by someone's arch nemesis. It's great design, but its meaning is somehow... intimidating maybe... I can't find the right word. It's not scarry, but it's scarry to others (non-archers) maybe. At least it would sound like it's intended to be.
Nemesis:
1capitalized : the Greek goddess of retributive justice
2plural nem·e·ses \-ˌsēz\ a: one that inflicts retribution or vengeance b: a formidable and usually victorious rival or opponent
3plural nem·eses a: an act or effect of retribution b: bane 2
Of if you've seen the 'Snatch', it's Brick top. Do you think Brick top is a good representation of Arch Linux? Kidding

Haha, the left one reminds me of a towel... Probably because most towels have that stripe. Or is it just Serbian towels?
Anyway, I like them both, but the horisontal line (the underline) may be a liiiitle bit too much... But, hey, this is a LOT better than the previous one.

I hear that there is going to be a contest to pick the new Arch Linux logo. Hoooray!
However, now that we know there's going to be a contest, I vote for it's delay. I see that some people are just starting to come up with great stuff here in the brainstorming period, and maybe there will be more. I think it would be wonderful if devs could set the date a little bit later, like give us a week or two to work out all the angles.
On the other hand, it would also be nice, if Arch could have the new logo by 2008-01-01, don't you think? Like really make the New Year rock for Arch.
