sorry brainstorming...I hope you don't think that I am spamming the forum
With that one, I think the left leg would look better if horizontal, don't you think? The thin part of the arch is going to need a lot of work when scaled down. Other than that, it's nice. But I liked the last one better. Sorry to bring liking into this.

Eary draft of the logo concept based on the original meaning of arch in Arch Linux:

Very nice!

Here's a couple mashups of the Nemesis concept, showing how easily it can be tweaked to accent various artwork:
Realy cool. I like the idea behind this concept, but I don't like the "main, empty" Arch nemesis symbol...
I was playing around with the Arch linux text included in an A, results here.
Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch.

Just updated the king of all penguins.

Imageshack is kinda busy these days, so if you fail to see this concept, please notify me, and I'll upload it somewhere else. It took about 1 min to actually start loading the page when I clicked the link a couple of minutes ago.
Before you ask, the darkish theme was intentional. I'm NOT trying to appeal to consumers. I kinda like the darkness which makes us think a lot.

Bravo, Thayer, always one step in fornt of the rest of us! I was thinking about KDE and GNOME integration as well, but you beat me to it.

This is completely different from the actual logo, but I think it's absolutely AWESOME.
I really like your idea to reinterpret the meaning of "Arch". I don't like very much the font (what about "Planet Estyle"?), but still, the logo is great.
P.s.
Can you provide an svg and/or show us how good it scales to different (smaller) sizes ?
Offline
Didn't really reinterpret it... I was Judd who said it meant "principal", as in arch angel, or arch nemesis. So, I basically presented Arch Linux as the king of all penguins.
BTW, will add a nice wallpaper.
About the font. Well, I kind of like the black vs light combo that the current logotype uses. The Planet Estyle doesn't come with the light version, so I couldn't use it that way. If you come across something neat, please inform us.

Update:

Fixed kerning (actually the previous version wasn't hand-kerned)
Added two wallpapers.

Just a few thoughts (I haven't been spending much time at the computer lately)...
Freigeist's concepts are amazingly similar to the ones I tried and rejected. But he's made a much better job of it than I did.
Thayer just keeps coming up with good stuff. Arch Nemesis is very clever. Not sure I could live with it, though. (I've just realised why.)
I like Matt3o's colours. I might "borrow" those myself.
I wish I'd thought of the King Penguin.
And I'm even beginning to like some of the facelifts of the current logo.
Hopefully I'll get more stuck in to this over the weekend...

I love the foxbunny's concept, but do we really want a penguin on a linux logo? Isn't it a little... predictable?
Offline
Just wait untill everyone stops using it. Then our logo will be the only penguin logo.
Haha, well, you've got a point there. But I don't really mind myself because I absolutely LOVE penguins. Mostly thanks to Linux, but most of all, this:

That will probably never happened.
By the way there was a logo concept of a penguin combined with the mouth of pacman in the art section. To bad that section got removed since no one was really using it. That section had some interesting ideas. Anyway, I think it was a interesting concept which still could be used.

plus, probably it's a bit pompous or at least immodest to say that arch is the "king of linux"
Offline
Yeah, but it IS Arch Linux, the principal Linux, first among all Linuxes... Not my idea. Blame Judd. However, IMNSHO, Arch is THE best. I'm not just saying that. It really is.

Far from true with regard to Arch Linux perhaps, but I'm proud of it.
Aren't we all, guys?

After the 'March', I really hated happyfeet. And Surf's up I don't really like either. Those are humanized versions of penguins, and penguins are sooooo much nobler than most humans will ever be. I watch Surf's up quite often, though, because my daughter (1.5 y/o) cannot get her eyes off penguins. I put a penguin as my wallpaper, and she won't let me open any windows.

Correct, if we really are the best, we should also have the best logo:

Woot!
What I want to do with my concept is emphasize the self-confidence and power of Arch Linux.
When I talked to an Ubuntu user a while ago, I asked him why he is not using the latest version of Scribus. His reply was to the effect that he cannot trust repos outside Ubuntu's supported repos. Fair enough... or it would have been if he was not feeling bad about not having access to latest software. But he firmly believed that NOT having the latest is a good tradeoff between features and sability. On the other hand, we have all the latest and greatest, and the (famous?) Arch Linux stability and performance.
We have the confidence that no matter how fast we run, no matter how cutting edge we go, our system will hold. Just like the Emperor penguins that keep the egg warm during the -80 deg.C Antarctic winters standing firmly on the ice even as winds reach speeds of 100+ miles per hour. Our beloved Arch displays (and should be proud of) excellent performance and stability and has been that way ever since I've started using it about a year ago.
That is what I think the new logo should be about. Maybe we are not there yet. Maybe we are not even close. But I, for one, am perfectly confident that Arch will be (if it is not already) the best out there. I want to make this concept all about Arch and our community, not Arch versus others, Arch better than or worse than others. I don't feel like there needs to be any comparison.
Oh, yeah. One more thing. The 'king' metaphore has actually a twofold meaning. One if, of course, explained above. The other is the complete control we have over our box. We are the kings of our machines, because Arch allows us to command it the way we want. Kings do have great many responsibilities but a wise king can make his kingdom florish.

Wow that's a lot of confidence, foxbunny. Arch was my first linux distro, and I feel no need to switch. I tried Ubuntu to see what the fuss was about, and it's confusing: I had to adapt to the way they decided to do things. Whatever I've read about other distros seems worse than arch. I also tried gentoo for a while... it's way too big and complex.
So: I agree, even though this can be interpreted as going against the ideal of free choice for everyone. The Arch Way says that Arch is not meant for everybody, But being the best does not mean Arch is for everyone! In any case, for its users, Arch is the best. From what I've gathered from these forums, most people find their ultimate distro in Arch, Some people leave for other OSs, but they come back! (However this may be true for other distributions' forums, I haven't been around to check)
Therefore, I like your logo foxbunny. It's full of confidence. And it's funny.

Kings we are! What I like about arch the most is that with it, my machine does not tell me what to do, I am the one telling it what to do. This is the way things should be.

If you ask me, I'm betting for this foxbunny's concept art.

Nice idea. Two suggestions (nothing wrong with this version, just a few ideas):
1. make the background look like a shield?
2. simplify (stylize) the shapes just a little bit?
hehe thx
1. maybe it would be to much but i´ll try it
2. this is needed of course

I totaly agree with you. Do you think we can express this concept without "penguins" (linux) and "crowns" (king)? Something more subtle I mean, less predictable.
