Gdm

Hello.
There is something wrong with GDM on my machine. Gnome works fine, but when I reboot the system all preferences (language, theme) are lost. I installed all packages using pacman so everything should be configured OK.
When I shutdown/reboot my system there is an error with GDM module (perhaps, it doesn't exist or something like this - I can notice it because after it computer shutdown normaly. Another thing is that, when I boot my Linux, there occur next error with GDM.
Maybe those two errors are connected with my problem that GDM lost his configs?
I'm waiting for help.

PS: Can you give me an advice where I can find logs with those errors (when booting and shuting system)?

Re: Gdm

Hi,

gdm and gdmgreeter log its issues to /var/log/daemon.log, i think. just do a

cat /var/log/daemon.log | grep -i gdm

another location is /var/log/gdm and config files can be found here: /etc/gdm.

I also encountered several problems with gdm since last upgrade. You're not alone:D

Re: Gdm

I get an error when shutting down or rebooting (I'm on a laptop, so I get this a couple of times per day).  There is a log message that says:

Oct 15 22:37:32 highvoltage gdm-binary[6226]: WARNING: Command failed /usr/bin/poweroff: Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/poweroff" (No such file or directory)

I actually DON'T have the poweroff file, but I never recall having it.  I do have a "poweroff" file here:

/usr/lib/klibc/bin/pwoeroff

Do you think that's the one it wants?  I don't think it is (I'm running Gnome as well, not KDE).

Re: Gdm

This is an error that I get when Linux is booting:
"gdm-binary[5496]: WARNING: Didn't understand `' (expected true or false)".

And here is the one that occurs when I shut/reboot my computer (the same as Rokixz):
"/var/run/gdm.pid doesn't exist, perhaps GDM isn't running".

Is there any solution? smile

You must edit your "/usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf" and replace :
RebootCommand=/usr/bin/reboot;/sbin/reboot;/sbin/shutdown -r now;/usr/sbin/shutdown -r now
by
RebootCommand=/sbin/reboot;/sbin/shutdown -r now;/usr/sbin/shutdown -r now

It's the same here.
