Advice sought on usb soundcard

I'm considering to get an external sound card for my laptop. It's a brand new HP Pavilion, and I assumed that the "Entertainment" part of the series name implied that the multimedia parts were excellent, but apparently, they aren't -- I can't run jack without xruns no matter which settings I use, and the options in alsamixer are only a fraction of what I had on my previous laptop (a HP compaq) which died.

So I'm considering an USB sound card, and I wanted to check:

1. will it solve my problems? is it fast enough to run real-time?
2. any recommendations? I mostly need it for recording and other real time tasks such as hydrogen, guitar effects, etc.
