enlightenment 0.16.8.10-1 won't start on i686 vmware virtual machine

Xorg.0.log has no fatal errors.

Only error in slim.log is that module glx does not exist - I would not have thought this fatal as I am using a vmware video driver.

Any suggestions?

OK - a little further troubleshooting showed that the problem was not the rarian upgrade, but the upgrade of enlightenment done at the same time.

I found enlightenment-0.16.8.8-1 and downgraded to this (from enlightenment-0.16.8.10-1), and all now works.  Before the upgrade I had been running enlightenment-0.16.8.9-1 without problem.

enlightenment-0.16.8.10-1 works fine with rarian here. Are you sure the problem is caused by rarian? Make sure your system is up-to-date and your mirror has fully synced. AFAIK, enlightenment doesn't depends/use either of scrollkeeper/rarian.

Re: enlightenment 0.16.8.10-1 won't start on i686 vmware virtual machine

Sorry, my previous comment was perhaps not clear enough - the ONLY PROBLEM was the move from enlightenment 0.16.8.9-1 to enlightenment 0.16.8.10-1, the fix for me was to roll back enlightenment, and the only old version I could find easily was 0.16.8.8-1.

I think I should change where this thread is and the title of it to reflect that, but I don't know how to do that.

So the problem is that enlightenment 0.16.8.10-1 does not work for my setup, and I cannot see anything in the logs to indicate why it is not working.

Re: enlightenment 0.16.8.10-1 won't start on i686 vmware virtual machine

How do you start it? Do you use i686 or x86_64?

Also, do you use the epplet-base package?  It was updated at the same time than enlightenment 0.16.8.10-1 so the problem could be caused by one of the epplets.

BTW, to change the thread's title, edit your first post.

Re: enlightenment 0.16.8.10-1 won't start on i686 vmware virtual machine

Running i686 arch linux on Intel T2500 @ 2.00 GHz (single cpu vm running on dual core laptop).

enlightenment is started by ~/.xinitrc as follows:
exec /usr/bin/starte16

epplet-base is not installed, so the problem is purely with enlightenment 0.16.8.10-1

Currently using 0.16.8.8-1 - works fine.
Prior to upgrade I was using 0.16.8.9-1 - worked fine.

When I upgraded to 0.16.8.10-1 - login would start, but as soon as enlightenment tried to render the desktop the X server would be killed and restart, resulting in slim reappearing and asking for login details.

As it is a vm I can make a copy of it and retest, if necessary.  If there are debug/trace compiles of enlightenment I can install them rather than the default enlightenment package to see if that gives more info about the problem - the same for the X server.

Re: enlightenment 0.16.8.10-1 won't start on i686 vmware virtual machine

I had problems with enlightenment 0.16.8.10 as well on my machine.  When I upgraded it seemed to work at first, but then it would freeze.  If I put my mouse over the iconbar, enlightenment would crash.  Once it looked the window manager dumped out because all the border decorations disappeared and only the current window could get the focus.

Now it could be my theme, 23ozglass, but the reason i'm using e16 instead of e17 right now is mostly for this theme.

Long story short, I never figured out the problem.  I just added IgnorePkg=enlightenment to my pacman.conf.

If you figure it out, please let me know.  I'd prefer to be up-to-date, but I just don't have the time right now to do troubleshooting.
