Need help with xconsole under Arch?

I hope this is not a dumb question but how can you get xconsole to work under arch?

I assume you must run "xconsole" or "xconsole -daemon" as root.  Then a blank xconsole window  appears.  But how do you tell it to send messages to xconsole?  Does syslog do that?

man xconsole

for syslog

sudo xconsole -file /var/log/syslog.log
