Is it just me or do neither Java nor Flash work in Opera?
I've tried doing "Validate Java path" and opera:plugins, both of which indicate that whatever is needed can be found, but Java applets display an outline where the applet should be and Flash displays a white box.

yeah this has been my experience too with opera. It just does use the available plugins like mplayer and such.

I should add that I have had at least Flash working in the past (I don't remember about Java). I've also tried starting with a fresh configuration (i.e. moving .opera) but it didn't help.

Hmm... I've never had trouble getting flash to work with opera?
Just download the flashplayer for linux from adobe's page and run it and it automaticly installs and after browser restart works fine.

Opera 9.24 seems to fix the problem with plugins.

Hmm.... I have the same problem and I'm using 9.24. The error that I get when I am strating a java applet:
Runtime link error - it appears that libXt got loaded before libXm,

note that on x86_64 these things can get kind of icky.
I have Opera working with Java, flash, and movies. I know Opera comes with Java (if you want), otherwise you can just set the path. same with flash. Whats really a pain is getting movies to work with mplayer. Unfortunately I don't think a single 'do-it-all' fix exists, you just sort of have to download mplayer-plugins for firefox and hack your way through.

I had some java problems and opera and in some extend firefox/seamonkey. I could get java to run !!?? It was running before but after updating it gave me this error , when I run in a terminal : # opera -debugjava
" Runtime link error - it appears that libXt got loaded before libXm, which is not allowed "
I had other cpu's whice had no problems !!
so digging around I found this
http://bugs.gentoo.org/181854
so it turn out that in my ~/.bashrc there was a line :
"AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit"
whice is wrong, pls delete it or turn into :
"AWT_TOOLKIT=XToolkit"
Then opera/firefox etc. all works )
If you can't crack it then hack it !!
