You can also go to the firefox webpage and browse through thousands of themes and add-ons that will help soup up firefox.

De facto, the only good thing about Vista is the design, which I like very much. So call me a traitor too, but it seems beautiful to me. KDEmod is close and in some regard even beyond.

Re: How to unugly my Arch????

Is OK guys, I won't call you traitors unless you actually use Windows, that is a traitor. wink Still I find my Linux look better than what Vista looks on the computers I've seen it.

I would suggest doing

pacman -Rsc ttf-ms-fonts && pacman -S ttf-liberation

You'll get sued for patents infriction if not. lol

Fonts are covered by copyright, not patents.  Font rendering techniques can be covered by patents, but the significant ones are held by Apple, not Microsoft.

To this day, Microsoft has not identified a single patent that any Linux/GNU application is infringing upon, despite being able to see the source every day.  One wonders if they're a.) lying about the infringement entirely, or b.) afraid that their patent(s) will end up being invalidated if they actually identify an infringement.

@kagerato
Yeah, I know, I just were jocking hence the "" after the statement. But you give a valid point in what you say. I think they are not entirely lying, I go with your b) option.

On topic,
@nucleuswizard
Also is good if you turn on anti-aliasing of fonts, in user space and in the KDM  font option in control center.

Re: How to unugly my Arch????

you an also add free Vista core fonts. These are really nice as MS hired one of the best font designers

download free PowerPoint Viewer (PowerPointViewer.exe) from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta … laylang=en

install cabextract (pacman)
next extract and install:
# cabextract PowerPointViewer.exe
# cabextract ppviewer.cab
# ls *TTF

you can also try beatiful fonts from
http://www.josbuivenga.demon.nl/index.html

however these fonts will not work with OpenOffice as openoffice for mysterious reason refuses to add support for otf (Ps based opentype) fonts. All other apps including koffice and firefox will be able to see these.

I would suggest to install (AUR)
cairo-cleartype
freetype2-cleartype
libxft-cleartype

which will make your fonts shine in any app in linux

Definitely install the cleartype packages. I did, last week. Wow. The difference is amazing.

Well that definately makes a difference ... Way too smooth fonts actually for my taste ^^
I've used this:

It's imho better for my monitor.

Oh well, chacun a son gout, I suppose. I found the colour fringing on the standard subpixel rendering, and that version, far too distracting. Cleartype's beautiful. Isn't "smooth" the whole point? smile

Smooth yes, superblurry... not smile

I think the endresult depends on fonts you use and the size of lcd...
Having 22" 1680x1050 monitor the "blurry" effect was way too much with cleartype.  Those lcd-packages seem to be more subtle but I still easily see the difference.

I'll post a pic to compare:
(libxft-lcd and cairo-lcd)

Edit:

Firefox fonts look great imho, I think its verdana in firefox. Urxvt font is monospace and it looks good / readable too. But gnome font is tahoma and thats a bit crappy and hard to read... or maybe im seeing things smile

Re: How to unugly my Arch????

I love the way my KDE Desktop looks. My Settings are:

- Icons:

Crystal Project (although I keep testing others)

- Style:

Lipstik (I do change some default settings)

- Window Decorations:

  Crystal

- Color Scheme:

  Lipstik White

- Fonts:

Bitstream Vera Sans Mono 8 for Fixed Width
Trebuchet MS 10 for Window Title
  Tahoma 8 for the rest

- GTK Style:

QtCurve (Makes a difference with GTK apps, if you also install gtk-qt-engine it creates an entry in Control Center which makes it easier to select QtCurve theme for GTK apps)

Most of the things I use are not included in a vanilla KDE, but you can install their packages or find their PKGBUILDS in AUR.

Take a look at the screenshots

Re: How to unugly my Arch????

I've found that xft does a very good job with the Bitstream Vera fonts. At first I tried to use tahoma or verdana, but now I use Bitstream Vera Sans 8 for almost anything. I suggest you give it a try. I didn't have to do any tweaking to get things to look good.

Re: How to unugly my Arch????

fonts don't have to be blurry
http://img85.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fontao7.png

this is not really perfect but "/" is not jagged
same stroke size in "M" or "k"
letters without "soft shadow"

it may depend on font used or something else. Of course this may not be what you are looking for.

Hmm. That certainly doesn't look as bad as it did here. You might be right about it depending on the fonts, although my lcd is 1280x1024, which allowing for the aspect ratio, is fairly similar to yours.

As I said, though, each to his own. I like cleartype.

Could you expand on this? How do you utilize xft? pacman says I have libxft-lcd installed... must xorg point to it somehow?

Try to install Liberation Fonts. IMO are better than DejaVu or Vera B.

BTW: I don't understand why users who are against MS mostly use Microsoft fonts?? because there are many which are good.

Re: How to unugly my Arch????

Hi! Anyone who will help me achieve the gradient look on window decor? Ive already installed crystalgl from the arch repository. but it's no use. the windows is still flat looking. the only thing that changed was how the window buttons(minimize, close) look.

Please help. Here is a previous post of my desktop.
