I had the same problem: I could print but xsane would find no device.
hp-check came up with an error, no ppdev installed, and insisted on having this before even installing hplip.
So I removed hplip, did a "modprobe ppdev", then reinstalled hplip.
Installation mentions to put hpiao into /etc/sane.d/dll.conf -- which must have been there before because I used hplip for quite some time with xsane --- I checked it and hpiao was commented out. Removed the comment and I can now print AND scan ...

I also have the problem that i can't scan anymore. Every time i start xsane i get an error message:
Failed to open device 'hpaio:/usb/Photosmart_2600_series?serial=MY49GDJ2VG0400':
Error during device I/O
and i have to turn the printer off and on again, because after this error appeared i can't print anymore.

I have same problem. I get "Unable to communicate with device" -error, but I solved it. So everything seems OK, but I can't print even now. I get now "open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds..." -error.

Earlier version of the hplip everything worked fine. I can't understand why it does not work.

I have a Deskjet 970 Cxi and am also esperiencing the above listed problem "couldn't connect to device"
the printer worked fine before the hplip update after which the daemon was no longer needed.
I tried all of the above (updates, chmod, adding user to lp camera and scanner altough i haven't the latter two and removal of hplip)
nothing helped. the current status is:
- kde printer installing wiz doesn't recognize the printer at all anymore (regardless wether hplip is installed or not)
- the printer can only be installed with the hp device manager (hplip installed), is then recognized by cups and kde but i get the error above.
HELP i need my printer to work and have no idea what's wrong there. after the updates the problem shouldn't exist any longer.

yes. i have the same problem since i switched from my HP deskjet 5740 to my new photosmart C3180.
it have the groupe scanner and i can't print with it.
but if I change the group to lp all is working fine even the scanner.
so i wonder if i am gonna delete the /etc/udev/rules.d/sane.rules
or may be i rename it 53-sane.rules ??
i think that's another fix needed for hplip to work nicely ? no ?

I have problems too. When I power on my printer yours permissions are:
$ ll /dev/bus/usb/001/008
crw-rw-r-- 1 root scanner 189, 7 oct 20 14:29 /dev/bus/usb/001/008
If I change group to "lp" printer work fine, but Xsane don't work, :-(.
How can I fix this?.
Regards.

Maybe be this got something to do with each other:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=291541
I can print from normal applications (gedit/acroread), but I can't print the cups testpage.

sane-1.0.18-9 fixes this problem correctly.
Previously, the ordering of udev rules resulted in the printer being assigned to group scanner. Now it is correctly assigned to group lp.
If printing previously worked for you and now doesn't please ensure you are a member of group lp.

Correct, the group is now "lp", but xsane don't work.
I think that is a permissions problem, the error message is:
Error from I/O device.
If I run:
$ sudo chown root:scanner [device]
Xsane work good, but don't print.

I've fixed then problem changing permissions with "chmod", but I don't like this solution:
$ ll /dev/bus/usb/002/008
crw-rw-r-- 1 root lp 189, 135 oct 23 20:27 /dev/bus/usb/002/008
$ sudo chmod 666 /dev/bus/usb/002/008
crw-rw-rw- 1 root lp 189, 135 oct 23 20:27 /dev/bus/usb/002/008
When power on the printer and the permission is done, there is change the file in /etc/udev/rules.d.
I think that there is other solution more elegant, but I don't known what is this.
Regards.
