How to use external monitor?

Hi there!

I recently upgraded my nvidia kernel module and kernel. Since that time, i cant just plug in my VGA monitor to my laptop and use it.
What i want is, when i plugin the monitor to the VGA port, then restart X,  only the VGA monitor should be on, and the laptop display should black out. With the older nvidia version this was the default behaviour.

edit: when i am in a console, both monitors are on, but in X only the laptop display is on

Hi,
you could try xrandr ... this is a pretty neat tool for handling several monitors
