I think the last version of nividia is meant for kernel 2.6.23 , did you upgrade the kernel also ?
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19-pkg1.run
this one runs just fine on 2.6.22 and 2.6.23 (both custom)
I did not try NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.23-pkg1.run, however I haven't seen anything interesting for my card in changelogs (and I don't use compiz).
The only problem I had was
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run refusing to run on 2.6.23
Because I am using -K switch (during nvidia installation) all my kernels (currently four) have nvidia installed so whichever I chose to boot it starts with nvidia. I am pretty sure then that NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19 runs well with 2.6.22 and 2.6.23
