When I used to watch DVDs in windows using theatertek it did a great job of taking most DVDs in non widescreen format and scaling to full screen my 720P Sanyo PLVZ4's projected image without a large black area on top and bottom. The projector has a zoom setting that does the same thing but at the expense of making the movie unwatchable. There probably is a way to get mplayer, xine or vlc to do this better. I have tried playing with the aspect ratio as well as xine video plug ins. The few DVDs in widescreen format are projected without black borders. Thx for any help

Are you talking about the black borders that are encoded into the movie stream? If so you can do mplayer -vf cropdetect dvd://. It will give you a -vf crop=X:X:X:X values that you can put into the next run of mplayer.
It's not exactly automatic. I'm sure there are scripts out there that will auto detect where to crop the borders.
