Next week I may start as treasurer for a club I belong to. Has anybody had any experience with any of the money managing programs available.
I have both KDE and gnome .

KMyMoney2 may work for you.

gnucash? Never hear very good things about it though...

sql-ledger is a good double entry accounting system that even includes POS. may be overkill though

Might want to look at LedgerSMB instead of SQL-Ledger (again, if this type of thing is not overkill for the purpose). LedgerSMB is a fork of SQL-Ledger initiated apparently because the author of SQL-Ledger wouldn't respond to security issues. The controversial fork and the resulting flip-flopping of SQL-Ledger's license type after the fork is kind of an amusing read (/.'d and everything )
Here's a direct link to LedgerSMB:

Also, to get a handle on some of the lesser-known-but-potentially-useful accounting / money management packages available, see this article:

I've used and like jGnash for a couple of years...cross-platform too since it uses Java. Might be good if other club members don't use Linux and need access.

There was a linux.com article a short while back about a simple budget app called buddi:

I haven't tried it, but if the other suggestions don't work out, it might be worth a look. No arch or aur packages, but there's a .jar on the website.
Good luck.

Not important any more, I didn't get the job. The former treasurer told me I should be happy about that as dealing with the rest of the exec was a PITA.

Try Homebank http://homebank.free.fr/ I use this program to keep my personal financies.
The program is really easy to use and it has version for windows, linux, Nokia N, Mac OSX. On the contrary to GNUCash it uses a simpler approach to manage yout bank accounts.
Hope you enjoy it

KDE4 users should check out Skrooge. It is now part of KDE4 I really like it. Maybe too simple, but developed heavily.

Well, if you're at all into minimalist interfaces, there's ledger, which offers command line double-entry book-keeping:

I've found it very robust, but it has a steep learning curve.

+1 for ledger
I shopped around everywhere for a good program to manage my finances. I tried quicken, ms money, gnucash, homebank, kmymoney, and ledger. I've had the best experience with ledger by far. Gnucash was also great, but I wasn't a huge fan of the gnome dependencies or the XML file format.
