Just wanted to see if it is really that similar. smile

They are not consistent, the Ubuntu people. smile Let's not make the same mistake, Archers.

Meanwhile I'll try to find the Ubuntu official logo.

Okay, found it and posted just below my logo. Yup, the yellow kinda comes close. But I don't think it warrants a change.

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

@dumb8d0g:
Best proposal on this post! If Arch would look as simple and smooth as in your artwork i would be happy! The only thing is that i would like to change the blue into a more individual color (since blue is used too much in the distroworld wink ).

So he is the first person adopts kiss to the artwork wink

My first 3 tries of making a logo were thwarted by inkscape, which had random crashes (and, ask me why, i never was satisfied enough with my work to even save it into a file...).

dum8d0g, very nice indeed and almost exactly what I did for my splashy theme. Great stuff!

Here's a screenshot of the SLiM theme, and I'm still trying to tweak the splashy theme (it's such a pig to work with):

If you wanted that kind of logoless simplicity, you could have easily done it in GIMP or even KDE Paint or some such raster software. (shrug)

@dumb8d0g:

IMHO, that is the kind of design that is quite lovely in itself but tends to reinforce the Linux4Geeks kind of image... Dunno. I could probably get used to it a lot quicker than to any of the artwork that were posted, though. (including mine) lol

In fact, i don't care if it is with or without logo, as long as its simple. For example imho your (new) logo isn't as simple and clean as, for example, thayer.w's or dum8d0g's (i think because of the 3rd Dimension you added). So i like their Stuff much more.

My reason to use inkscape was, because gimp is so broken when you use it with wmii big_smile . I never heard of KDE Paint and i can handle inkscape quite good (haven't used it for years, but i'm not a noob as you probably thought tongue).
But i must admit that my creativity must have left me for now, which is the reason i dont care about if i can submit some stuff or not wink

That's a matter of taste, imho. And please tell me when I said going without logo is bad? I just pointed out that not using Inkscape was not an obstacle for creating such (graphically) simple stuff.

First off, no one is forcing anyone to submit stuff, nor there is a penalty for not doing so. So, basically, I could care less if you or anyone else submitted anything. wink As for your noobness (or lack thereof), I have said nothing to imply that. All I said was that if you were aiming for simple design, you had a much wider choice of tools at your fingertips.

EDIT: BTW, GIMP is broken in many ways even uder GNOME. big_smile

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

@foxbunny:

I like your approach, even if I do not really like the shape of your proposed logo. The one with the penguin was just great, but the sun theme is also not bad. What really is stunning me is your promotional poster. It looks like Arch Linux is one of the essential elements of life. Nice to attract new users - even if I doubt that those users would really comply with our perspective of what is regarded as 'essential'.

@thayer.w:

I have looked at your proposals and they seem very professional to me. The 'A'-Theme is something I very much appreciate and hence prefer it over foxbunnys proposals. Especially your 'big logo' draft seems very appealing. It reflects, what Arch is trying to be like and in fact is like. Something, other distributions are lightyears away from achieving, as they have already become too complex to be simplified down to a level that Arch can claim itself to have reached. The KDEmod variant is not too appealing, but I am sure you can improve that one. I do not really like the 'K' char, I would very much prefer a the KDE gear, woven into the 'A'-Logo - probably with an adequate corona around it. Pulsating power for your PC, given to you by Arch and the K Desktop Environment on tremendous steroids.

All in all: Great work, I very much enjoy watching the proposals gather.

So far, regards

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

@dum8d0g: your work totally fits in perfectly! I like the concept of a "simple" and sane logo with the various uses, as it keeps one of the main arch philosophies in mind, that being the KISS philosophy.

@Sigi: yes, @ is even more in the simple is elegant philosophy! :-)

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

Remember the colour wheel? I think there are "warm" and "cold" colours. I like that the current arch logo feels soft, and I think that's mostly due to the cool colours. But then looking at the Ubuntu logo foxbunny posted (which uses warm colours) I realise shape has to do with the effect also. Round shapes provide softness while sharp shapes yield, well, sharpness.

In the idea that Arch has become a home distribution for many users, a place where they are finally comfortable and can go at their own pace, and feel at home in a welcoming community, I think we should aim for a softness effect in the logo.

Of course, Arch is a bleeding-edge distro. But "bleeding-edge" sounds unstable; Arch is usually very stable due to its simplicity, and the repos are organized in such a way that the software installed is of high quality (well, you know). So I'm against using a sharp design.

Just a thought. To everyone who has posted logos: keep making good use of your talents, I enjoy your work!

Thayer.w,

As much as I like your first 'submission', I can't get around the christmastree-feeling I get when I see your current 'submission', especially with the accented details.

While the logo breathes professionalism and creativity, IMVHO this is a no-go, sorry.

Zl.
PS: Man, I hate writing this because this kind of critique is so negative, and I don't want to be... But maybe you'll consider also submitting your forst concept...

If you have Inkscape, get the London Between font from dafont.com and the SVG from here:

http://foxbunny.team88.org/arch/

This one: http://foxbunny.team88.org/arch/arch_global_poster.svg

There is a link to the font page just below the logo in the concept collector thread.

OTOH, I may take time to package it as printable PDF once I'm home. Now, off to work I go. sad

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

peets, you've got a good point there. However, imnsho, it is just one side of the story. You have to understand that most of us, who have invested their time and energy into this project, started with their own, subjective, and, imo, equally valid notions about Arch Linux, which they tried to shape into a pleasant visual experience. I don't expect any of the concepts to perfectly align with each and one of the community members and/or developers, but this is probably not the last time we change the logo.

As for the inviting theme... One the main things I liked about the arch website is the warmish grey color used for the background. It looks inviting, casual, plain. But that was brutally anulled when I tried to install it for the first time. I didn't read the manual first, of course, but I thought I could do it because of my previous experience with Slackware. So I think the inviting nature is something we've discovered, bit by bit, during the long time use of this distribution, not something we could have taken for granted at the beginning.

Therefore, in the last concept, I wanted to present Arch as something quite exciting (the yellow), but requires you to think a bit more, and get involved some more (the black). Black might not be inviting to everyone, but neither is the command line. wink

No offense, but that looks like a nipple. Sexy. smile

Imo, that logo looks kind of cartoonish with those two incisions... Don't know why but Pocahontas comes to mind... Maybe the version without those was better, at least for me.
