82845G/GL doesn't come out of standby properly

I've got a Samsung V20 laptop with the following video card:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)

If I put the laptop into stand by then restore it the backlight comes on but the display stays blank.

I've read quite a few reports of this chipset having problems with X (and I do occasionally have problems as well) but this is if I do a stand by from the terminal, straight after booting with nothing special loaded.

I've tried switching between terminals, that doesn't work.

I've tried switching between lcd and crt, nothing.

Adjusting the brightness works but doesn't display anything.

If I try to start X I get this error:

I can ssh into the machine and all seems to be running ok.

Can anyone help fix this?
