tty device error

I am using Arch x86_64 and I have made my box a SSH Server so that my friend can login into it and we can share our programming files :-) . To do that I want to use "write" commands to start chatting. So I want to him to be able to write on my terminal but I get this error:

[lisphor@Arch64 ~]$ who
lisphor  vc/1         2007-10-24 19:24
[lisphor@Arch64 ~]$ mesg y
mesg: error: tty device is not owned by group `tty'
[lisphor@Arch64 ~]$

What is the problem ?

[NOTE:  I ran that command when SSH was not running]
