Hi,
Just got a new machine (Lenovo Y410). I was trying to set up wireless but the wifi card never showed up. Looking at dmesg showed:
ipw3945: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On:
Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work.
Ok fine.
But, the problem is that the switch is on the correct position...
Any help/suggestions highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You have MS Windows installed too?

No, Arch only.

You're on wired connection now? It can block your wireless... Try putting the switch on/off during boot, or disable the hotkey in bios.

Tried both. No luck.
or disable the hotkey in bios.
BIOS on this machine lets me set up... well... time and boot device order...

Ok, some more options...
boot with the network disabled (switch turned on), and then enable it (turn it off) after the driver has detected that the switch is on.
Try if fn-f2 does something to disable/enable kill switch
If you have the possibility to install Windows on it, that could do the trick turning the switch.
I hope this can help you, I don't know more, maibe someone else does

Thanks again for your help.
Should anyone have this problem, you can also try:

None of these worked for me unfortunately. The only thing that finally solved this problem was to install windows temporary. Needless to say that this really sucks. But works.

This morning, my machine went back to its original state for an unknown reason, IT SUCKS. STAY AWAY FROM THAT CRAP (or test it first with a Live CD).

This is FAR FETCHED but......I wonder if the BIOS is noticing that Windows is or is not booting and sets some options. Have you tried adding:
acpi_osi=!Linux
to your boot line in GRUB? There are more options for this parameter so you may want to look into that.
