My computer wont turn off

This is a really wierd problem, but I can't get my computer to shut down.
I type
>shutdown -h now
And it goes through the shutdown process and then says "POWER OFF" then it just sits there, no big deal I can always press the power button, but when I do that, the computer powers down but spontainiously starts up again after about 5 minutes. I eventually have to unplug it. It is an old dell deminsion v400 pII.

Anybody have any ideas as to why this is happening?

what Kernel are you using?

sounds like you are using a 2.4 series kernel. those are such a bugger to get working right for apci or apm settings. i think if you have the 2.4.24 kernel powering down works now if not then 2.6.x should work for you.

it is all in the kernel config and alot of motherboards are really finnicky about the power management settings.

If you use lilo you can put an append line in to shut it down possibly. Xentac, Gyroplast & Marin_Linuxer all posted this option awhile back and it worked for me.

append="apm=power-off"

HTH but sometimes it doesn't depending on the kernel I believe.

if i am not mistaken you would add that line to your lilo.conf or menu.lst files (note if you use lilo do not forget to run lilo afterwards)

yes. If you are booting in grub, you can test to see if it works first too. Just hit 'e' key at the grub screen..then add "apm=power-off" to the end of the kernel line....
If it works for you, then you can edit the menu.lst file and make it perm..

you can also try acpi=force to enable acpi
at boot up if your bios is older than 2001
but it can turn your system unstable in case of a buggy acpi bios

for some reason i have to use

 shutdown -h -t now now

on one of my boxes, its the only thing that will work
