Gimp 2.4 upgrade... weird problem with brush outlines

Ever since I installed Gimp 2.4, I have had a weird problem with brush outlines.  Instead of just following the cursor around the screen, the outline leaves a persistent trail that eventually gets so thick I can't see the image.  I have to switch to another tool such as rectangle selection and perform some task that redisplays the image (select an area and click inside the selection will work, or zoom in/out).  I finally had to turn off brush outlines entirely... which took some googling since I didn't know the name of that feature in order to find it in the menus and turn it off.

Has anyone else experienced that, or did I screw something up when I installed the upgrade?  This did not happen with 2.2.
