Sound problems: Unable to play 2 or more audio files at the same time

EDIT: Found out the problem is with something else, sorry for the inconvenience

Hi there,

I'm experiencing the following problem: After starting an audio playback and start another, the latter does not have any sound at all, not even after I switch off the first one. It happens with anything what needs a sound card, which, I say, is rather annoying, since, for example, it'd be useful if I'd hear a sound notification of a new message on any IM while playing music.

I don't know where to start, so I'd appreciate any help.

EDIT: Found out the problem is with something else, it has something to do with the audio players I'm using
