How can I achieve the following.

Hey, as some of you know, I'm totally new to arch and Linux in general. I've installed arch successfully using virtualization. However, my connection is EXTREMELY slow, and I'm worried of losing everything that I download. So my question is: Is there a way to work with arch, and then export everything (packages) that I have downloaded in case I decided to switch completely to arch?
Because of my connection, I just can't re-download. If the above is doable, will I be able to do the same thing with updates?

Thanks. I hope that was clear ;p.

To mess up a Linux box, you need to work at it; to mess up your Windows box, you just have to work on it.

Sure, of course! Pacman caches all the packages it downloads in '/var/cache/pacman/pkg'. Just copy everything in there to your new install.

You may want to run 'pacman -Sc' first. That command deletes all outdated packages in the cache, so you don't copy anything you don't need.

By the way, welcome to Arch! I'm sure you'll be completely switching very soon now. wink

also, if you have access to a fast connection somewhere else you can pacman -Syup in your arch, and then download those packages elsewhere, copy them to your cache, and install

On a side note, what does the core ISO include? What packages? I downloaded that 160mb or something.

Re: How can I achieve the following.

I save my cache all the time, then in case I reinstall anywhere, on any computer, it's just a reinstall, edit of pacman.conf, copy the files over, and a pacman -Syu + pacman -S packages and everything is all done and without wasted time downloading! smile Great time saver.
