mplayer (& vlc) plays mkv files in slow-motion

hi to all,

although audio is played correctly, video is played in slow-motion
here are some video's details (as reported by gspot & mpc) :

Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1280x544 25.00fps
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch
File type : Matroska Media file (.MKV)
Mime Type : video/x-Matroska

I cannot replicate this with a file using similar encoding.

i think the problem is relative to my processor Athlon xp 2600+

yes its the processor, i use to have a athlon xp 2600+ and i can not play 720p (1280x768) videos, now with 5200+ everything is smooth even 1080p h264 :D:D:D

You need to have hardware acceleration from the gpu drivers to play hd content.

For me HD files play smoothly with latest ati drivers, didn't play smoothly before ^^

as far as i know the nvidia drivers dont support hardware acceleration h264 decoding now... only mpeg2

Is this still the case? If I play a mkv 720p file, it doesn't play very smooth, but it doesn't shock, but it can be better. I have a 3800+ and a nvidia 7900GS. Are the drivers te problem?

Could you give us your mplayer config:

cat ~/.mplayer/config

Also, try this:

mplayer -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=0:fast:skiploopfilter=all video.mkv

I normally use totem(gstreamer) and vlc (but vlc doesn't work anymore, because of some update),
Your mplayer parameters work good! Only the quality is not as good as if I play it with totem.
In my ~/.mlayer/config I only added "zoom = 1".

My gui.conf doesn't work, it complains about alsa and pcm.

Hey thanks that settings work good in mplayer !!
The only thing is that gmplayer still gives errors:
[AO_ALSA] Unable to find simple control 'PCM',0. 47% 8% 1.3% 168 0 49%
While mplayer is working ? Hm strange. I even delete the gui.conf.
