Re: Arch Linux logo concept

James, the shapes are kind of cartoonish atm. If you were aiming for cartoonish, than that's okay. It doesn't look slick enough to me, though.

Shadow/highlight setup is not realistic, so it kind of tears the thing apart. Also, it looks like the logo is leaning too much towards right, so you have to stabilize it a bit. It can lean, don't ge me wrong, but it has to be supported somehow. Imagine a person on blades. If he leans forward, his posteriour has to go further back to compensate, or he has to strech his arms back... You know what I mean?

I don't know if you already knew, but people assign the same 'physics' to artwork as to real-life objects. So, basically, the same rules apply. If your object is not stable, just add supporting structure, or remove things that put weight on it. The need for stability is simple: people feel uneasy when they see something that is about to fall... Artists often explot this fact to create disturbing images, but in case of a logo, it's not good...

You are from Australia, right, James? That speaks a LOT about your concept. big_smile

Sorry... I don't like it too much tongue It isn't a "rational" design imho.

James

Was it established that Karat can no longer be used?  If so then I am sorry to hear that and I think it's a mistake.

Buy a license so we can use it then...

Use in a logo, even for free purposes does not count as examining and testing. I'd prefer something we can use freely now, as in, unlimited use even if it's just not-for-profit. I make no mention of modification.

Now we presume Judd or the designer of the current logo had a legal license. We don't, so we cannot use the typeface in any new design.

foxbunny: Yeah, I already had problems with stability, and I know exactly what you mean. Hadn't thought about the opera house at all though... TheBodziO's design looks more like it than mine :)

PJ: I got the tute link before, thanks. I'm not much good when it comes to perspective and lighting in my designs, which is why i generally try to stick to 2D, but people find those too basic.

I spoke to a few people, linux users, non linux users, and a few echoed the sentiment that the current logo is great and just needs a rejuvenation. I'm still fond of it, and I think it's worth keeping to retain the now quite familiar identity.

PJ, it'd be great if you could enter yours here: http://www.geocities.com/kinortkele/arc … logo1.png. I think it looks fabulous, and so did a few other people.

Anyway, I put a few not so new ideas up based more directly off our current one.

Very nice iphitus. I absolutely love it. I was going to do something similar today, but you beat me to it. tongue

Hm, don't know about the logotype, though. It coud be made a little bit less wide, so that it doesn't look like it's sticking out to the right.

You're right. Scaled the text a bit and it looks much nicer. At the same urls as last time (forgot to rename before scping...)

Yes, I am going to submit it to the contest. So far I am working on some details on it, so I guess I could rush it a bit. smile

It is original, simple but not simplicistic and it looks great. Well... maybe it isn't the best at "16x16", but it's still good.

I like it too because it is obviously very \/aginal.

I can assure you that, since the original logo was designed with a fully licensed typeface, it is 100% legal for us to redistribute an SVG copy of the karat-stylized text "archlinux" in a non-font form.  It is terribly common for designers of both web and print media to use exotic fonts for their clients.  Those clients aren't required to have a license for each and every font used in their marketing campaigns, so long as the original designer held a valid license at the time of its creation.

We can use the current karat-based 'archlinux' text freely now, in an unlimited capacity and regardless of whether it be for commercial use or whatever.

There is a p3n1s there in other submissions, too, if you look closely. smile

The triangle is an archetypal image of an errect pen1s when it points upwards, and vag1na when it points downward. The fact that it wasn't intentional makes it even more fun. big_smile

@labelsix
That is definitely the BEST design I've seen so far... As an afterthought... reminds me of some clothing brand, though...

Seems like I didn't see the p3nis in the same artwork, I saw it in the generic icons in Submission #1 from Synorgy. Well I guess you could find this kind of stuff in pretty much everything if you really where looking for it...

www.weyerhaeuser.com

The company has been around since 1900. They are a 21.9 billion dollar company. You may want to look into the legal ramifications of using their logo and color scheme.

Re: Arch Linux logo concept

Well, the logos I like are as follow, in order:

1) Submission #1 from foxbunny, "Alpha Sun"
2) Submission #1 from freigeist, "Strictly KISS"
3) Submission #1 from ari_dbx

All of them are great, but this were the ones that stand out in my opinion.

Great stuff! Just not sure about the 'a rch' thing. For a second I thought it said 'a rich linux'. Maybe you need to twak it a bit. The kerning, I mean.

I'm still tweaking the Alpha Sun. Is it against the rules if I sent you an updated version?

thayer.w wrote:

To be honest, 3 weeks ago I would've said yes, we definitely need a logo.  Now, I am more inclined to think that no, we don't need a logo.  I think it would make a clear statement that we are not your average distro, we are not for newbs, and we are not for everyone; we are unique. It also leaves artwork open to all interpretation. The community could pick and choose whatever artwork they like the best.

I tend to agree. Perhaps, in that light, a general logotype concept might be agreed (in addtion, maybe, to a basic graphic shape) that could be adapted by the community in different ways.

Freigeist's latest would be a good place to start. The usage of  a large "a" could be a constant (not necessarily lower case, even) as could the bordered circle, but everything else would be left to the individual's imagination, so it's always recognisable as "the" Arch logo even if it's never the same twice. In a way, this would follow on from what has happened de facto with the current logo (in that there are numerous different renderings), but make it official policy.

Good idea, or am I going raving mad? big_smile
