tint (ttm) Error

I simply compiled tint and copied the default config file to my home directory.  Whenever I go to run it I get:

[matt@matt themes]$ tint
No protocol specified
Could not open display.

Any suggestions?  I uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

xhost +<hostname>

did the trick for me
replace <hostname> with whatever your machine's hostname is ofcourse
