Compiled in vs. loadable modules

Is there any performance benefit to compiling frequently used modules (e.g., network adapter, sound card, mouse, etc.) vs. loading them as external modules?  I don't swap out my hardware that often, so there's no loss of convenience or portability if I build the drivers directly into the kernel.  On the other hand, that means I have to manually build and install my own kernel rather than use pacman's kernel26 updates.

So... am I wasting my time on a task that doesn't buy me a performance gain?
