REQUEST: fbcondecor (fbsplash) patch

I would like to request that the fbcondecor (currently 4200_fbcondecor-0.9.4-2.6.23-rc7 from genpatches) patch be added to the stock archlinux kernel. Other boot splash projects have come and gone but fbcondecor (formerly known as fbsplash) has been consistent and seems to be a pretty benign patch and works very well. It is part of gentoo's stock kernel patches so it will be available with very little effort for future kernels.

Please chime in if you are also interested in this patch.

Thank you,
Raymano

P.S. I have also put in a request for this in Fly Spray: FS# 8385

Re: REQUEST: fbcondecor (fbsplash) patch

I would also really like to see fbcondecor added to a kernel, especially now with all the nice new logo suggestions coming in! Looks like Arch is going to get a lot more good artwork soon – it would be nice if you could use bootsplashes it with the stock kernel. But is fbcondecor consistent with the KISS philosophy? If it isn't, maybe a separate kernel packages would do?

Wenerver I learn to make my own PKGBUILD scripts, I would gladly help out with a packeges in AUR… cant be that hard to add just fbcondecor? Would really like to see it in the stock kernel though

IMHO fbcondecor conforms to the KISS principle. It's a very small patch and stays out of the way if you don't want to use it.

+1

Currently the only reason why I would build my own kernel.

but you do know that fbcondecor is not a boot splash thing, right?

Here's a quote from spock's blog:

spock wrote:

The reasons for the name changes:
[*] Since the gensplash project was started, everyone referred to the userspace part as "fbsplash" anyway.
[*] Many people don't realize that fbsplash is fully functional and usable without any kernel patches.
[*]fbcondecor (which stands for: Framebuffer Console Decorations), which was previously named "fbsplash", has nothing to do with displaying the splash screen during boot. The only thing that it does is displaying pictures in the background of system consoles. This is not a splash screen, but a decoration and should thus be named accordingly.

also, be aware that splashy is getting picked up by a couple of "mainline" projects (pm-utils, ususpend) - but since neither splashy nor fbsplash need a patch there's no need to chose one for the stock kernel. (And I don't think that fbcondecor would get into splashy's way if one wanted to use those two.)

That all being said, I also would like to see fbcondecor included.
Andreas

Re: REQUEST: fbcondecor (fbsplash) patch

As I'm sure you've all seen, the feature request has been closed, and will not be actioned for the stock kernel. A more realisitic option would be a community kernel package - post the request on the AUR mailing list to see if any of the TUs would be interested in maintaining one.
